Polaris World Foundation for Cooperation and Development Aid, in collaboration with F.C. Barcelona Foundation, is beginning the construction of an education complex in the African country of Mali. This project has the technical support of the Salesian Père Michel Centre.
Polaris World Foundation has donated 40,000 euros for the construction and equipping of a community primary school in the city of Bamako. Around 150 children will be able to attend the school per year and, out of school hours, more than 100 adults will have the opportunity to learn to read and write.
The new centre, which is expected to open in October, is being built in the multi-ethnic neighbourhood of Sans-Fil, an area with a very low socioeconomic level and a low literacy rate.
Apart from providing the neighbourhood with infrastructures for education and educational support, the project aims to provide a comprehensive monitoring system for the most vulnerable children, mostly in the area of education, but also in other essential aspects such as childhood development: nutrition, leisure and sport.
In order to be able to do this, the Polaris World Foundation Primary School will house an F.C. Barcelona Foundation XCIS Centre for extra-curricular activities. Here children will be able to have fun doing sport and learn non-academic subjects such as civil values, professional skills, IT, social skills, literacy and healthy habits, etc. The new complex in Mali will also provide basic health care and psychosocial support, as is the case in all the international XCIS Centres that the F.C. Barcelona Foundation has created on several continents.
Commitment to training, healthcare and water
In the almost five years the Polaris World Foundation has been up and running, it has provided more than 2 million euros and set up sixty projects in twenty-one African countries. Its commitment to cooperation and development aid is focussed on three main areas: water, education & vocational training and healthcare. It works on programmes aimed at building and equipping basic health and education centres, and providing professional training in agricultural and technical fields, especially for women in rural areas. It also develops irrigation systems for farm use and provides access to drinking water, among others.

Once again the weather was an important factor in the day´s proceedings with the unpredictable French climate putting the team and their technical strategies to the test. The technically demanding track at Le Mans had a lot of surprises in store for the riders, making the races for both categories aggressive. It was unclear what the final outcome would be right up until the last bend of the last lap.
In the 125cc category rain affected the morning warm-up session (in which Smith had a fall) as well as the first part of the race itself. Officially declared a dry race, when the rain began five laps from the end it was stopped for the change to wet tyres. The race was started again in the same order the riders had been in on lap fourteen. This time Smith started out in eighth position and fought hard to reach the leaders in only five laps, finishing second and achieving his second podium position of the season. This places him in eighth position overall in the championship with thirty six points.
#38 Bradley Smith – 2nd – “I had a very clear objective today, to finish the race and get as many points as possible. This podium position has come just at the right time after two fairly negative races. The fall I had this morning left me a little unfocussed and I didn’t start well. However, I started to feel a lot more comfortable with every lap that went by and I got faster. Thanks to the second start we had because of the rain I was able to start climbing through the pack. I’m really happy; a second place is the best way to end this weekend”.
In the 250cc category the choice of tyres was also decisive but, unlike in the 125cc race, this was made before the start of the race. Team Polaris World made a good decision by choosing to run on slicks and this went a long way to helping Mattia Pasini achieve his third place. He fought for second position with his friend Simoncelli right up until the last bend and the result leaves him in second place overall with a total of seventy seven points, confirming his potential in this new category.
#75 Mattia Pasini – 3rd – “We had to decide which tyres we were going to use before the start of the race. The first few laps didn’t go too well with the slicks, plus the track was wet and my knee was painful. However, as the race went on I got faster, my knee warmed up and the track began to dry out. This was a very complicated race. I think both Simoncelli and I were going at a good speed which helped us reach the leaders and we had to fight each other for second place. Although I tried to close the gap he overtook me in a good move. I have made some ground on Kalio and these are valuable points which keep me in second place in the championship. I think we are ready for the next race in Mugello. Riding in front of so many fans is exhilarating; I’ll continue to think about each race and, with the help of my team which ensures my bike is always fantastic, I know I will be able to fight for the world championship”.

Carlos Medrano Bernal, an artist from Cartagena will be exhibiting a selection of his most recent oil paintings in an exhibition entitled ‘Involuntary Existence’ to be held in Mar Menor Golf Resort Social Club and promoted by Polaris World Hotels & Resorts. The exhibition runs until 15th June.
With this exhibition, Polaris World continues to develop the initiative it began in October 2007 to support local artists. This is an ongoing project which has already offered several individual and collective exhibitions including work by Martínez Mengual, Manuel Avellaneda, Hurtado Mena and Manolo Pardo, among others.
A many-sided, existentialist artist
In his work there are undertones which reflect 20 years spent as a caricature and portrait artist. His interest in everything human results in paintings which are occasionally abstract. However, this is not due to surrealist interests, but an existentialist background which leads his work to deal with and to question philosophical themes such as essence, loneliness and emptiness.
Born in Cartagena in 1971, Carlos Medrano Bernal moved to Madrid to better his self-taught skills in the stimulating surroundings of the capital’s artistic ambiance. He studied Expressionism at the Reina Sofia Arts Centre in Madrid, as well as art and conceptual painting at the Kaleidoscope Centre in Móstoles, run by the artist Ana Agudo, a member of the PAR collective. He met renowned artists such as Petrus, Ana Agudo and José Villanueva, with whom he worked and collaborated on many projects and exhibitions, visiting Paris, Lisbon, Barcelona and Tenerife.
He currently has a studio in Cartagena where he has developed a large collection of work over the last few years, and where he has investigated and delved into the different fields which have led to him to describe himself as a many-sided artist within an existential framework.
